Phoenix, Arizona has long been thought of as one of the film industry’s favorite locations for shooting movies – what with “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” and “Little Miss Sunshine” on the list. Home to many of locally based film, commercial, animation and documentary production organizations, Phoenix is one of the major movie industry hubs for the Southwestern United States.

Students attending Phoenix film schools have the opportunity to learn the craft of making movies in the midst of this robust and thriving film environment. Between locally based production organizations and major Hollywood studio films being shot on location, the demand for talented film production professionals in the Phoenix area looks set to remain steady, if not increase.

There are many options when it comes to attending film school in the Phoenix area, including well-regarded programs at the Alpha Pacific Institute and the Art Institute. The film industry however, remains one of the most competitive businesses in the world. Any student seeking to embark on a career in the motion picture industry as a director, writer, producer or editor, needs to take advantage of every possible opportunity.

Phoenix film schools like the Entertainment Connection, that offer mentorship programs, provide students with a good chance to have the advantage over the competition. What could be more advantageous than learning the film business with an actual film production house as your setting and real film industry professionals as your teachers?

Textbooks and classroom instructions are all well and good, but to really observe, help and contribute to the filmmaking process as part of your education, gives students the edge they need to stand out from the pack. By working in an actual production environment, students learn through doing in a hands-on, real world environment.

Beyond being a hotbed of film activity, Phoenix is also a wellspring of talent from which the rest of the nation feeds. Thinking about Going to a Portland Film School?

by Alex Baker

If you are considering a Portland film school for pursuing an education in the film industry, you should think about a few factors prior to deciding on a school. First, be sure to assess the programs offered by the schools you are looking at. For instance, if you wish to be successful in the technical areas of filming (like lighting, sound, editing), then make sure that the school that you have selected has updated technology and computer programs. Among the most common programs used in film editing are Avid and Adobe Premiere – so be sure that your chosen school will allow you to utilize these regularly. If you’re aiming to become a great director, then make sure that the school you attend has a lot of courses about this field – after all, directing is a specified profession with its own jargon and artistry.

Portland is also a prime city – so after your film education, there will be plenty of job opportunities for you. Major movies such as Twilight and television series like Leverage have recently been filmed in Portland (and the surrounding area) and whichever Portland film school you choose should help prepare you to work on similar features. Portland also has a thriving film-viewing community as well – with a number of popular theaters that feature older films, all giving an ideal environment for pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.

Most significantly, you have to consider the kind of method that will serve you best as a student. Do you think that traditional classroom set-ups with multiple students taken care of by a single teacher would work for you? Or, would a “mentor-apprentice” program be more appropriate to how you would like to learn new materials. Many people thrive in the classroom environment, but others find themselves better served by having a mentor to learn from, with real-world experience and knowledge from within the industry. Portland is home to a large number of successful industry professionals and if you believe that this kind of approach would make learning for you easier, then consider this option. Ultimately, it is your decision and your education, but you must take a moment to think about how you would learn best. In the end, you’ll learn that your efforts of finding the right Portland film school for you is worth all your time ad efforts.

Finding the Right Seattle Film School

by Alex Baker

There are several factors that you need to think about before deciding on which Seattle film school to attend. First, and foremost, you must consider how it is that you learn best. Are you okay with staying in a classroom and having tons of classmates with only one instructor? Or, would a non-traditional “mentor-apprentice” program be better for you? Plenty of people are fine with the traditional classroom set-up but others are finding it more worthwhile to have a mentor that has a real-life experience in the industry. Knowing the best school for you is the same as knowing the best learning style that’ll work for you.

Secondly, know the area of filmmaking that you want to carve your niche on. If you want to direct, then ascertain that the school you are choosing has strong directorial programs. If you’re looking to do editing or lighting (or anything else on the technical side of filmmaking) you must make sure that the programs will give you hands-on experience with the right technology and computer programs that are being utilized in the film industry right now. By getting into the appropriate Seattle film school, you’ll have access to tools and equipment that will make you a successful professional film editor, grip, etc.

Finally, consider what Seattle offers you in the scope of filmmaking opportunities. While it does not match the volume of filmmaking being done in Hollywood, Seattle opens up a greater opportunity for smaller work or independent work away from the stress and hustle of California. Mind you, it’s through smaller projects that aspiring directors and filmmakers are able to hone their talent to make them ready for larger responsibilities. In Seattle, you’ll be able to show people places that they’ve not seen before and to use the natural features of the metropolis. Within a close distance, you can see beaches, forests, rolling hills, and grassy plains – as well as metropolitan cityscapes and gorgeous sunsets blazing through the blankets of gray clouds. Finding the right Seattle film school is the first step you’re taking towards a future in and exciting and ever-growing industry.
